I recently wrote a post recommending that if you find a similar low airfare, avoid flying in Spirit Air. I recognize that sometimes it is hard to resist the temptation when you are bombarded with emails from Spirit Air advertising round trip flights for less than $15.00. So I succumbed to the temptation and booked a flight to Fort Lauderdale -Puerto Rico. The cost? Just $130.00 for me and my wife (taxes included) I actually paid more in taxes that in airfare.
I’ve been wanting to go to Puerto Rico for the longest time. None of the cruises I’ve taken had gone to Puerto Rico, so I couldn’t resist booking a quick getaway for the two of us and decided to spend 4 days and 3 night on the Caribbean island during Thanksgiving week.
Once I booked the flight, I began searching for a nice hotel. I did the regular searches: hotwire, hotels.com, and the likes. I found several affordable hotels in San Juan, but when I read the reviews I was not impressed. So I dedicated my second round of searches to my favorite money saving technique: Timeshare presentation.
As you know, all timeshare companies offer you ridicule low prices at their resort as long as you are willing to sit down for a couple of hours hearing a sales pitch. I personally don’t mind doing it when the savings are significant. So I started looking around and came across several websites advertising time share resorts packages in Puerto Rico for a good price. But since Christmas is approaching and there will be a lot of extra expenses, I needed to find something nice, but dirt cheap. I’ve known for a while that a lot of reputable travel companies that specializes in time share packages sell their inventory on eBay, so I did a quick search and found Eztravel USA, a Miami based company that have numerous packages to the Caribbean, Orlando, and Dominican Republic (all sponsored by time shares) I noticed that they were selling a 5-4 nights stay at Puerto Rico Melia Resort for around $200, but since I was going to stay there for only 4 days and 3 nights, I called them up to see if they had a similar package for that time frame.
To my surprise, not only did they have one, but it was also a lot cheaper. So at the end, I ended up paying $67.00 for the entire stay on a 4 stars resort! Not bad. As a bonus they also gave me 4 days 3 nights stay on a hotel in Orlando, Florida free of charge. So my entire getaway, with hotel and round trip flight for two people was $200.00!.
I am also looking forward to this trip because I will be testing a new blog program for the iPhone, that would allow me to post to this blog wherever I am and include pictures with the post. So I am going to try to post some notes with picts during my trip. I’ll be fun tying to type something on the tiny iPhone virtual keyboard.
If anyone wants to give me some recommendation before Tuesday of things to do and places to go in Puerto Rico, just drop me a line.
By the way, here is the web site to the Melia Resort. I’ll be staying at one of the Junior Suites.
